emancipated minor

For financial aid purposes, an emancipated minor is a person younger than 18 who has been granted the status of adulthood by a court order or other formal arrangement in his or her state of legal residence. Emancipation due to a parent’s divorce or child support termination does not meet the requirement as emancipated minor for financial aid purposes.

For residency purposes, an emancipated minor student is any student younger than 21 years old who is not under the care, custody and support of an individual or individuals having legal custody.
